Southern Illinois AIDS Coalition Seeking Holiday Sponsors

The Southern Illinois AIDs Coalition is seeking donations and sponsors for the holidays.

The project helps needy families whose households are impacted by HIV/AIDS. There are several families still in need of sponsors to fulfill wishlists and the group is also accepting donations. Gas cards and grocery gift cards are specially appreciated.

Vice President of Finance LaGina Crimm said the impact of the holiday project goes beyond meeting material needs.

While some things may have to be altered, holiday traditions provide a sense of normalcy that can be especially important for family members with Alzheimer’s.

Elizabeth Cook is the manager of media relations with the Illinois Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. She said families shouldn’t give up on their usual celebrations.

If you’re looking to buy local this season, the Illinois Made holiday gift guide can help

Several southern Illinois businesses made the list, with online shopping options to let people buy safely during the pandemic.

George Majka from Pomona Winery said the pandemic has been tough, since a lot of the business is based on wine tastings of the company’s wines, which are unique because none are made from grapes. But there are still options for people looking to buy local wine for the holidays.

City of Carbondale

The City of Carbondale is giving the gift of free parking this holiday season.

Beginning Monday, December 10, visitors will be able to park at no cost for up to two hours in several locations. You can see the list of free parking lots here.

You'll be paying more at the gas pump to travel over the holidays.

The gas price monitoring website Gas-Buddy-dot-com reports that the average price per gallon in Illinois is 30-cents higher than last week.

In several weeks the University of Illinois Extension Service is offering a free public workshop on coping with stress which can accompany this time of year.

Extension Educators Susan Sloop and Alicia Kallal will lead the program on Tuesday December 12th at the Marion Carnegie Library.

Local Leaders And Residents Urge Local Shopping.

With the Holiday shopping season here, WSIU visits with two people who would like to see more local shopping.

One room in   Building H at John A. Logan College was filled with 100s of toys, collected by the Poshard Foundation for Abused Children and partners Tri-State Business Equipment in Harrisburg and Ameren Illinois.  In all, over 700 new toys were collected and were picked up by case workers with several southern Illinois social service agencies.

One insurance provider says Illinois close to tops in the nation when it comes to reported thefts during December and January.
