The University of Illinois Extension service is offering training to become a certified Master Naturalist.  The 12 week program runs Thursday, January 23rd 2020 through April 9th, 2020.

Next year, on December 3rd, Illinois will be exactly 200 years old.  And to commemorate the bicentennial, WSIU is airing a series of stories featuring the many unique aspects of the state.  WSIU's Kevin Boucher sits down with  officials  with the U.S. Forest Service to learn more about a unique feature of the state---a feature of the prairie state that surprises many who think of flat cornfields stretching as far as the eye can see.

Improving The Forest, By Removing Trees

The Illinois Department of Conservation, in cooperation with various conservation partners, is conducting a program designed to increase the number of Oak and Hickory trees in a small section of the Trail of Tears State Forest in western Union County.

On May 8th, 2009 a severe storm, known as a Derecho, hit southern Illinois with heavy rains and high winds, some of which clocked in at over 100 miles an hour.  Many homes and businesses have fully recovered from the storm.  However, the southern Illinois forest, is not back to "Pre-May 8th" conditions.

Chris Benda is a Botanist, and the President of the Illinois Native Plant Society, and in this feature he leads a group of hikers on a wildflower hike at Dixon Springs State Park in Pope County Illinois.
