Super Bowl LIV is this Sunday in Miami with the Kansas City Chiefs taking on the San Francisco 49'ers.

Members of the Illinois High School Association have dropped plans to use districts during the football season.

The new format was supposed to start in 2021. But, schools rescinded the plan this week by a vote of 374 to 241.

After member schools of the Illinois High School Association last year narrowly approved a districting format for high school football teams, a new proposal is being floated.

The Chicago Sun-Times has obtained a copy of a new playoff proposal that's expected to be sent to the IHSA in the next few days.

Illinois high school football schedules would change under a proposal Illinois High School Association member schools will vote on over the next couple of weeks.

The proposal would replace conferences with districts arranged by class into eight geographic groups.

Illinois celebrates its bicentennial in 2018.

Although football has not been around quite that long, the state's  long and successful history on the gridiron started as early as the 19th century.

A new plan in Illinois aims to end youth tackle football programs… and it bears the name of Dave Duerson, a 1985 Chicago Bear who killed himself. 

The proposed law bans tackle football for children under 12 throughout the state… with the goal of preventing CTE, a degenerative disease of the brain caused by repetitive brain trauma.

As the high school football season kicks off tonight in southern Illinois, there is a strong emphasis on player safety, especially related to concussions. There is a new state law called the Youth Sports Concussion Safety Act and the IHSA has reduced the amount of time for player contact in practices.

A former high school quarterback is suing the Illinois High School Association for allegedly not doing enough to protect football players.
