Fourteen SIU-Carbondale students are moving out of one of the school's housing units after a Sunday afternoon fire.

The fire at Evergreen Terrace on Pleasant Hill Road damaged apartments in the building including one belonging to Alma Alcala, a junior in Dental Hygiene.

Fire officials spoke at SIU today about efforts to encourage people to update their smoke alarms.

Illinois residents using battery operated smoke detectors will have until 2022 to update their alarms to a 10–year smoke detector, thanks to a law signed in January.

Houses built after 1988 are required to have hard–wired alarms, so this law will impact residents in older homes.

City officials say the fire in the 700 block on West Freeman Street was reported at about 4:50am Wednesday.

Firefighters are still battling spot fires after the old Brown Shoe Factory building in Salem went up in flames Wednesday night.

The structure now houses Dalton Storage on West Main and College Streets.

The call came in around 10:00, and Salem Fire Chief Roger Mann says when crews arrived, the building was quickly becoming fully engulfed.
