Illinois' two U.S. Senators have introduced legislation to redirect federal resources to public housing residents and communities that have been the victims of fraud, like in Cairo.

U.S. Senator Dick Durbin is cosponsoring legislation that would rollback one of the provisions of the 1994 crime bill. It’s called the Restoring Education and Learning Act— or REAL Act. The bill would restore Pell Grant eligibility to people incarcerated in state and federal prisons.

A new poll from the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute indicates more people are optimistic about the direction of Illinois.

Institute polling director Charles Leonard says this spring's poll shows 22-percent of respondents believe the state is moving in the right direction, compared to nine percent last spring.

As the Federal Government Shutdown enters its second month, over two dozen  guards at Marion Federal Prison had the chance Tuesday morning  to let Illinois Senator Dick Durbin know  what it's like working without getting paid.  Durbin heard stories about having to call lenders and see if they would accept a late payment.  Durbin also heard from one prison guard who said that, due to the sensitive nature of their job, missing payments on household bills or loan payments, could result in that prison guard getting fired.

Senator Dick Durbin met with residents of Cairo public housing on Tuesday, August 7th to discuss the future of the community.

Plans include demolishing two unused complexes as soon as the last residents depart, then clearing the space for future development. HUD authorities will also be doing deferred maintenance on occupied units and working to improve conditions for residents. 

Illinois U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin is supporting President Donald Trump’s pick to be the next ambassador to Kenya: Illinois state Sen. Kyle McCarter. That’s despite the significant political differences between Durbin and McCarter.

Durbin says he met with McCarter this week in Washington, D.C. to discuss his Kenya nomination.

McCarter is quite conservative, and Durbin says his voting record poses “some issues.” But that isn’t stopping him from giving the Republican a thumbs up.
