Carbondale Announces Coronavirus Precautions

In response to coronavirus, the city of Carbondale has announced efforts to prevent the spread of the disease.

Carbondale City Hall will be closed to the public through the end of the month. Residents who need to pay bills may do so online, via mail or at a dropbox at City Hall. All events planned for the Civic Center or Town Square Pavillion will be canceled, except for voting. The Carbondale City Council meeting scheduled for March 24th is also canceled.

SIU-C Addresses Campus Changes Amid Coronavirus Concerns

The Chancellor's office took questions on Thursday, March 12th, regarding the changes to SIU Carbondale in an effort to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

The campus is extending spring break until March 22nd and will be converting classes to online or alternative formats. The campus is still open, however, and dormitories and dining halls will re-open on Sunday for students who decide to return.

Students that elect to return home will be able to move out of their dorms, though the university says refunds will not be offered in those cases.

SIU administrators have released a statement about the campus response to COVID-19 (Coronavirus).

Tomorrow will be the first day Illinois residents can start filling out the 2020 U.S. Census form online. State officials said remote technology will help with the count amid concerns about the spread of COVID-19.

As confirmed cases of Covid19 rise across the country, local healthcare providers are preparing to respond.

Doctor Moore Connelly, chief medical officer with Southern Illinois Healthcare, said the organization is having regular meeting with public health departments, other healthcare systems, and community partners to stay up to date.

"Different screen recommendations, how to ramp up capacity if we need to do that, PPE, so face masks and gowns and supplies," Connelly said, speaking about what types of issues are being discussed.
