Carbondale Police are searching for a suspect wanted for an attempted robbery Monday evening.

Officers responded to the 400 block of East College Street just after 6 p.m. Monday and learned the suspect approached the victim, implied he had a weapon and demanded the victim’s property. 

Two people are wanted for a robbery late Monday night in Carbondale.

Police responded to the 800 block of East College Street just before midnight and learned the suspects lured the victim to the rear of a building where one of the suspects displayed a handgun, robbed the victim and fled the area.

A five thousand dollar reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest of a Carbondale murder suspect.

Defund The Police Rally Planned For Carbondale

A rally aimed at highlighting the movement to defund police departments is planned for tonight in Carbondale.

The march is being hosted by Sunrise Movement Southern Illinois. The group is calling on the city to defund the police. Th e Carbondale Police budget for 2020 is over 10 million dollars. The group says community policing is used to target many in the community, including poor people, immigrants and people of color.

The protest will start at 5 pm at Attucks Park. Mask are required.

Thursday night Carbondale leaders, social activist and members of the NAACP held a town hall on policing and other concerns.

With cases of racial injustice being highlighted across the country, city and community leaders came together to discuss solutions on a local level.

Through multiple platforms the panelist answered questions on many topics including residency requirements, body cameras, school programs, de-escalation training, and defunding the city's police department.

In light of protests around the country, the Carbondale NAACP and city officials will be holding a policing town hall on Thursday, July 9th.

The panel will include Fire and Police Commissioner Randy Burnside, Jackson County State’s Attorney Michael Carr, social activist Michael Coleman, Chief of Police Max Grubbs, Carbondale NAACP member Nancy Maxwell, City Manager Gary Williams, and IL NAACP member Robert Moore.

Advocates Speak Out Against Arrest Of Trans Protester

Local LGBTQ+ advocates have issued a statement condemning the Carbondale Police Department for how they handled the arrest of a protester on June 28th.

Witnesses said the protester was slammed against a car and others who tried to intervene were pepper-sprayed. A police press release referred to the individual with male pronouns and gave a name they do not currently use. According to friends, she goes by Cat.

The Carbondale Police Department has issued a statement regarding Sunday's incident near Italian Village where officers appeared to struggle with a person they were trying to arrest.

Video from a witness shows fellow protesters asking why the person was in custody, and questioned tactics the police used. Officers in a witness video then appeared to push them back and pepper-sprayed them.
