Illinois' two U.S. Senators have introduced legislation to redirect federal resources to public housing residents and communities that have been the victims of fraud, like in Cairo.

Southern Illinois Congressman Mike Bost and U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth are calling on Congress to strengthen federal oversight of the housing crisis in Cairo.

They testified Tuesday before a hearing of the House Financial Services Housing Subcommittee. The topic concerned the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's failed oversight of the Alexander County Housing Authority.

Senator Dick Durbin met with residents of Cairo public housing on Tuesday, August 7th to discuss the future of the community.

Plans include demolishing two unused complexes as soon as the last residents depart, then clearing the space for future development. HUD authorities will also be doing deferred maintenance on occupied units and working to improve conditions for residents.
