Months-long flooding and a breached levee now leave farmers, whose fields are filled with sand, debris, runaway barges, scoured several feet deep, or inaccesible because of high water covering the road, unsure of what to do next.

The Southern Seven Health Department has now confirmed a case of COVID-19 in Hardin County.

The city of Cairo has seen its ups and downs since it was established in the mid 1800’s.

The confluence of two major rivers made this river port town a hub for rail and river shipping to Chicago and New Orleans.

The city has seen a steady decline since the 1940’s, but there’s a project in development that some say could change Cairo for the better.

Alexander County Flood Damage

In early August Governor JB Pritzker was granted an extension to request a federal disaster declaration.

On Thursday he officially requested that Illinois to be issued the declaration.


It's now official... traveling from southern Illinois to Cape Girardeau and vice versa is about to get much more convenient.


The high water is slowly falling in northern Alexander County meaning residents in McClure and East Cape Girardeau are preparing for a major clean-up process.

Lesley Stoffel owns property in McClure and has been organizing a donation drive for residents in the flooded areas.

Officials in Alexander County say water is rising about an inch per day near McClure and East Cape Girardeau.

Dale Schultz is with the Alexander County Emergency Management board of directors. He says as the water rises, even locals are not able to travel.

In Alexander County, a post on Facebook indicates the Mayor of East Cape Girardeau is issuing an evacuation for the East Cape trailer park ONLY.

Power to the trailer park will be shut off Tuesday morning for safety. There is no levee breach, this is for the trailer park only and is due to seep water.

Union County and Alexander County 911 to Consolidate

Alexander County residents will receive 9-1-1-dispatch services from Union County due to a consolidation agreement approved by the state 9-1-1 administrator.

The Alexander County man killed in a car crash early Sunday morning has been identified.

State Police say 38-year old Jason Klein from Olive Branch was driving a 2002 Ford pickup truck south on Route 3 when he lost control.

Two former officials with the Alexander County Housing Authority face a civil fraud complaint accusing them of using public housing money for personal use.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced the complaint Tuesday against former housing authority executive directors James Wilson and Martha Franklin.

AT and T Donates $5,000 to Olive Branch Flood Victims

On Friday afternoon, at a barbecue and get together at the Alexander County Community Center, A T and T presented a $5,000 check to the Olive Branch Area Community Development Corporation to help with flood relief and to recognize the local efforts of the many volunteers who are working to recover from the flood damage caused when the levee broke near Olive Branch on New Year's Day 2016.

An Alexander County official hopes the federal takeover of the public housing complex in Cairo will mean better days are ahead.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced Monday it had taken possession of the Alexander County Housing Authority because of a long period of financial and operational mismanagement.

Federal authorities have taken over Alexander County's public housing authority, citing years of mismanagement.
