Some Illinois workers will see an increase in pay starting January 1st.
On January first the minimum wage in Illinois will increase to $11 an hour.
It’s part of Governor JB Pritzker’s path to raise the minimum wage a dollar per year until it reaches $15 an hour by 2025.
Murphysboro Chamber of Commerce Director Steve Webb says some businesses are still trying to recover from 2020 and this will add to that struggle.
“When it originally passed I know a lot of businesses, you know were concerned about it anyway and that’s before the pandemic, so it’s going to be tough, especially smaller businesses for like I said probably for at least the first half of this year.”
Tipped workers will see their wage increased to $6.60 an hour. More than 1.4 million people in the state currently earn less than $15 an hour.
