Illinois GOP Names New Senate Minority Leader

Illinois General Assembly

As the dust from Tuesday’s election settles, Republicans in the Illinois Senate will have a new leader come January.

Dan McConchie - a Republican from Chicago’s northwest suburbs - will serve as Senate Minority Leader.
He’ll replace Bill Brady of Bloomington, who came close to winning the governor’s mansion in 2010.

Brady led the caucus for more than three years, taking over in the tense waning days of the state’s budget impasse in 2017.

But under Brady’s tenure, the Republican caucus in the Senate shrank by several members. On Tuesday, the party failed to flip a hotly contested Senate seat in Peoria, and lost another formerly solid Republican seat in Chicago’s suburbs to a Democrat.

In a statement Thursday, McConchie said he’d focus on winning back voters’ trust in state government by pushing reforms, smaller government and lower taxes.
