A group of House Republicans met with the media in Springfield Tuesday to discuss taxes and fees proposed to help fund a capital bill.
Representative Blaine Wilhour from Effingham says Illinois should wait to see the federal infrastructure plan.
"It would be irresponsible for the State of Illinois to go forward and put all of this money out here, money that we literally do not have, most of it raised through tax increases on middle class families, when President Trump is advocating putting all of this money into infrastructure right now."
Wilhour says while infrastructure is vital to economic growth; state lawmakers have not prioritized it by putting money into the budget every year. He says this is proof the legislature doesn't deal with the real issues.
"Until we deal with the real issues...the pension crisis, the Medicaid crisis, education funding, the sheer volume of government, we're not going to be able to prioritize this stuff."
Wilhour says he doesn't trust politicians in Springfield not to insert political priorities over the real priorities of the state.
