A coalition of community groups is holding memorial events for George Floyd in Marion and Carbondale, as the anniversary of his death is this week.
A peace circle, march and prayer vigils are planned to honor the memory of George Floyd, who was killed by police last year.
Nancy Maxwell, one of the organizers, said the peace circle will be an opportunity to bring people together to engage in healing and conflict resolution. She said these events are still important, even after the conviction of the police officer who killed Floyd.
“We still don't know for sure [that] it's going to stay a victory,” she said. “It's just a baby step in a long walk to get to justice and peace. Three people got killed during the George Floyd trial, by police officers. So we still have so long to go.”
The peace circle and prayer vigil will be held at Tower Square in Marion Monday evening, and the march will start at the downtown pavilion in Carbondale at 5 pm Tuesday.
