The parade of flags will be the only in person event for this year's International Week.

While the US is dealing with anti-Asian sentiment leading to violence across the country,

The International Student Council says they haven’t heard of any local incidents of discrimination towards Asian students. But President Akmal Asoev says events like the upcoming international week can help reduce prejudice.

“Bottom line, I think most of the people who have that hatred, I think it may be the lack of the knowledge about the culture,” he said. “So the more we talk, the more we interact, the more we invite local people to our events and try to share our values, try to show we’re normal people, so then we’ll probably have a better relationship I would say.”

Although COVID has changed the way things will operate, SIU’s international week will begin April 5th, and include virtual events like a talent show, language hour, and cooking videos.
