Longtime SIU Bands Director Mike Hanes has died

The southern Illinois native led SIU programs for decades

The SIU community is mourning the death of long-time Marching Salukis Director Mike Hanes.

Services are not yet set for Hanes, who died on Monday - a social media post reported he was surrounded by family and had been battling illness for some time.

Hanes came to SIU in 1965, and served as Director of Bands until he retired. He was still active in the band program, returning to direct the Alumni Band at homecoming and other activities.

Hanes was currently serving as John A Logan's College & Community Band program.

He also conducted the orchestra for many years in the McLeod Summer Playhouse, as well as numerous other performances. Mike Hanes was 80 years old.

Jennifer Fuller joined Capitol News Illinois in July 2023 as the organization’s broadcast director. She will oversee the launch and operations of CNI’s new broadcast division.
