47th Great Cardboard Boat Regatta returns April 23

A popular SIU event is returning this month after a two year hiatus because of COVID-19.

The 47th Great Cardboard Boat Regatta returns April 23rd.

Participants construct boats made of cardboard, tape, glue, caulk and staples, but cannot use wood or foam like materials to help it float.

Racers are put into four categories, human powered, mechanically powered, youth 13 and under and instant boats.

Faculty advisor Mary Kinsel says you don’t always have to build your boat ahead of time.

“They can just pay the registration and we'll give them a kit and they can build something in, you know, 3 hours and they can race against other people who've decided to do the same.”

Each division winner receives a first, second and third place trophy.

There’s also judge awarded trophies for best use of cardboard, best use of a boat, best team sprite and the crowds favorite award.

“The fourth award, which is, uh, is the most fun awards, the Titanic award so the, the best sinking.”

Registration starts at 10 am and races begin at 1pm at the Becker Pavilion.

The Regatta started as a design class final exam in 1974.
