'Orange Is The New Black' author Piper Kerman coming to SIU

The talk will be followed by a discussion and book signing.

'Orange is the New Black' author Piper Kerman will be speaking at SIU on Thursday, November 4th at 7 pm at Shryock Auditorium.

Kerman's book inspired a hit Netflix series, and it tells the story of her year in a federal prison, serving time for a crime she committed over a decade before.

"I have to say, I love to go on campus and talk to young people about the facts of my own experience, having committed my crime fresh out of college, sort of thinking about the consequences of our choices, both for ourselves and also for other people," she said.

Kerman said she hopes the book and the series help to dispel some of the stereotypes surrounding incarcerated people.

Kerman is currently working on her next book, which follows the time she spent teaching in a men's prison in Ohio.

The talk will be followed by a book signing. The event is free but tickets must be reserved ahead of time. You can reserve a ticket online.
