The Big Event: A Saluki Day of Service

This weekend hundreds of SIU students will be giving back to their community in a big way.

The Big Event: A Saluki Day of Service is a community service event organized by the Department of Student Affairs.

Organizers say it’s a way for students to say thank you to the Carbondale Community for hosting them.

Assistant Dean of students Kathy Smith-Shaffer says the current restrictions from COVID-19 have made it challenging to find the number of volunteers they’ve had in the past.

“Having 250 the numbers are a little lower, but the fact that we are still in COVID and we’re still restricted, we’re pretty pleased with the numbers that we do have and that SIU students even though COVID is still out there they still want to give back.”

The Volunteers must follow health and safety protocols and provide their own transportation.
