A former baseball Saluki is taking over as the new manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The Pirates today announced Derek Shelton will become the franchise's new skipper in 2020.
The 49-year-old Shelton spent the past two seasons as the bench coach for the Minnesota Twins. Shelton has also worked for the Toronto, Tampa Bay, Cleveland and New York Yankee organizations.
The Carbondale native played on the last SIU baseball team to make the NCAA tournament in 1990.
Shelton earned the 1992 Abe Martin Award, given to the SIU player who best exemplified honesty, leadership, excellence, dedication and loyalty on and off the field.
Shelton will be formally introduced at a press conference on December 4.
