EPA to Unveil New Carbon Reduction Goals

The Environmental Protection Agency will unveil regulations for existing U.S. power plants next week.

The EPA is expected to set carbon pollution reduction goals state-by-state to give states flexibility to design cost-effective strategies to meet those goals. Jack Darin of the Sierra Club says he's excited about what the new regulations will include. He says the states need to diversify their electric grid to put America on a path to receive 25% of its power from renewable energy by 2025.

Industry analysts believe the Obama administration will use the EPA to push cap-and-trade systems and other anti-fossil fuel policies on U.S. states. Administration insiders say cap-and-trade will likely be one of the options the EPA gives states to cut their carbon dioxide emissions.
