Jackson County first responder holding a training exercise

First responders in Jackson County held a full-scale training exercise in Carbondale Tuesday.

A simulated hazardous material train derailment and vehicle train collision gave first responders a chance to practice coordination and communication among multiple agencies Tuesday morning.

Part of the exercise involve the evacuation of the Police Department and them reestablishing their dispatch off property.

Carbondale Fire Chief Mike Hertz says they like to perform these tests every couple of years.

“We work together a lot with these agencies, but, uh, you know, a lot of times not all of them at the same time. And so, yeah, the communication, the radio traffic, the frequencies, uh, it's something that we wanted to test today, also that we could all talk to each other.”

More than a dozen agencies teamed up for the exercise.
