A new farm store selling fresh produce is coming to the SIU Student Center.
When the students return to campus this fall, they’ll have a new place to get fresh produce on campus inside the Student Center.
SIU’s Sustainable Farm will sell fresh produce at a farm store in the Student Center.
The sustainable farm receives food waste from student housing and uses it to make compost for growing produce that will go back to student housing to be used in the dining halls.
University Farms Program Director Chris Vick says they want students to have access to healthy and fresh food.
“Our access we sell at the student center, the student center is also providing vouchers through the food pantry for students that can’t get or people who can’t get quality food, but they can bring those vouchers in and get some vegetables and greens from our store with those vouchers.”
What doesn’t sell at the farm store will be used in the student center salad bar.
