The City of Carbondale has named Gary Williams as its interim City Manager.
Williams currently serves as assistant city manager for economic development. He has been with the city for a little more than four years.
Mayor Mike Henry says Williams is the right choice because he can step in quickly and is familiar with what's going on in city government.
"We had one other candidate that we interviewed who was very qualified, not a current city employee. When Council evaluated the candidates they came out very close, but we ended up with Mr. Williams."
Henry says Williams is welcome to apply for the permanent position. Williams indicated he is likely to do that.
"The fact that I wanted to be the interim, I mean should provide, you know, some evidence that my future goal is to be the City Manager. This probably all evolved a little more quickly than I anticipated. But, I'm happy to be in the role."
Williams replaces Kevin Baity who resigned from the position October first. At the time, Mayor Henry said an evaluation of Baity's performance conducted by city council members and department heads led to him stepping down.
The City Council will vote on Williams' hiring during its regular meeting on Tuesday.
