Retired SIUC Chancellor Walter Wendler will be the new President at West Texas A&M University.
The school announced Wendler as the sole finalist for the job on Friday.
Wendler, who served as SIUC Chancellor from 2001 to 2006, came to Carbondale from the Texas A&M system. After leaving his administrative position at SIU, Wendler taught architecture and eventually was chair of the Architecture Department.
Perhaps best known for his “Southern at 150” plan, Wendler also oversaw the beginning of “Saluki Way,” which ultimately led to the construction of new athletic facilities and upgrades in other areas – as well as a renovation of Morris Library.
Wendler’s appointment at West Texas A&M must still be formally appointed by the school’s Board of Regents – which is expected at a later date.
