U.S. Congressman Mike Bost (R-Murphysboro) is backing the Truck Parking Safety Improvement Act, which he says will make it easier for truck drivers to find a place to sleep.
Bost says this legislation is important, especially as more and more goods are delivered by semis.
"We've got to move our goods from point A to point B. Our professional drivers have always done that, and done it well. But we need to make sure that they're safe and the general public is safe as well."
Shawn Hughes, Operations Manager for Vernell's Interstate Service says with truckers driving for as much as 12 hours at a time, finding a convenient safe place to sleep is vital.
"People don't understand is that, if there's nowhere for these people to stop and rest, they have to continue to look for somewhere which will then set them back."
Bost says the legislation would provide grants for truck stops to expand their safe parking areas.
