In 1987 Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge was added to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's National Priority List of Superfund sites.

The was due to the the presence of industrial contaminants like heavy metals Lead, Cadmium, Copper and Arsenic, leftover from industrial activities which took place during the war years.
The United States Fish and Wildlife Service is hosting an public infomrational open house on Tuesday October 23rd, 2018 to learn more about the contaminated sites within the restricted area at the Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge. The event runs from 3:30PM to 7:00PM.

Leanne Moore is with the U-S Fish and Wildlife Service and she says these contaminated ares are closed off to the public. She also adds that, based on the Service's investigations, soil and groundwater contamination has not moved off of the Refuge.
