The union that represents non-tenure track faculty at the University of Illinois plans to strike Tuesday and Wednesday.
Shawn Gilmore is president of the Non-Tenure Track Faculty Coalition Local 6546 and a literature lecturer. He said Monday that members hope the strike gives school administrators more appreciation for non-tenured faculty.
The union has about 500 instructors, researchers and other faculty but it isn't clear how many will strike.
The union has been negotiating with the university for its first-ever contract since October 2014.
The union's members typically work on one-year contracts and are not part of the tenure system that offers professors and others job protections. The union wants longer contracts.
A university spokeswoman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
