Carbondale's Super Splash Park is set to open at the end of this month, and leaders who've helped it become a reality say they're thankful that the community and the region didn't give up hope.
Park District Executive Director Kathy Renfro says even with a loss of funding and a year-long delay, people kept the faith.
"A lot of challenges, a lot of obstacles, but I have to say that people met them head-on with a lot of grace. When there's a community project that is grassroots driven, people just don't give up."
Renfro says they still have about $200,000 left to raise for the project, but she expects the money to come in.
The park, which had a nearly year-long delay when funding was frozen, will open soon. Renfro says it's been a long haul, but a worthy one.
"Thousands of people have kept the energy going through all these little hurdles we've had to jump over for the past couple of years. Anything this great is worth fighting for, right? Worth pursuing, and people have kept their eye on the prize."
The Super Splash Park will open Memorial Day weekend in Carbondale.
