Illinois State Police are adding extra patrols over the next several days, as more cars and trucks will be on the road for the Thanksgiving Holiday.
Trooper Joey Watson says he's hopeful people will remember to be safe this year - slow down, wear a seat belt, don't drink and drive, and put away the distractions.
"It's a choice behind the wheel. We are only an enforcement tool. If you make this a grassroots effort, something that comes from your wheel, something that comes from within your vehicle - poor choices lead to deaths. If we're driving correctly all the time, then the next thing you know, you're going to put me out of a job."
Watson says in addition to wearing a seat belt and slowing down, he and others will be watching for driving under the influence - and especially distracted driving.
"Distracted driving is now edging the numbers on just about every other traffic-related fatality we have. It is a huge contributor to traffic crashes."
Watson says construction zones may not have workers in them for the weekend, but drivers should still slow down and be careful because of the hazards associated with construction.
