This midterm election, even more voters turned out in southern Illinois than the last midterm election held in 2014. And the 2014 election had an unusually high turnout.
In the 2014 election, Washington County had one of the highest voter turnout rates with 60 percent. This year, Washington County increased voter turnout to 63 percent, but Perry County had 70 percent of registered voters show up to the polls.
And while many Southern Illinois counties had a voter turnout which exceeded 50 percent in 2014, this year, nearly every Southern Illinois county had a turnout which exceeded 50 percent, with at least half of those counties in the high 50s or 60s.
