A new survey shows more than one-third of Illinois human service agencies are helping fewer clients and tapping into cash reserves to weather the state's budget impasse.
United Way of Illinois surveyed more than 400 agencies statewide. In a report Monday, they say 34 percent of agencies reported cutting services.
Thirty-nine percent are using cash reserves to continue operating. Of those, 70 percent say they'll be out of money in three months or less. Almost one-fifth said their reserves will be gone by month's end.
Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and Democrats who run the Legislature have been unable to agree on a budget for the fiscal year that started July 1. That means many agencies that provide services such as job training, mental health and child care aren't getting paid.
