Snow Covered I-57 Causes Quite A Mess

Light bars

A snow covered portion of Interstate 57 in Williamson County resulted in multiple crashes.
The Illinois State Police say at just after 6 a.m. Thursday at mile post 49, a pick-up truck driven by 25-year-old Robert Davis of Creal Springs attempted to pass another pick-up driven by 39-year-old Shane Halvorsen of Grand Chain. Davis' vehicle went out of control on the snow covered pavement and slid into the right rear corner of Halversen's truck. Both vehicles slid off the road. Davis's truck hit a tree, while Halversen's vehicle came to rest in the median.

Then, two Federal Bureau of Prisons vans, carrying 20 workers on their way to a training exercise, pulled over with their hazard lights on to assist Davis and Halvorsen.

All 20 people were out of the van, when a pick-up driven by 24-year-old Mitchell Ussery of Faulkner, Arkansas, went out of control and collided with the two vans. Four of the workers were hit by the vans and had to be taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Davis and Ussery were cited for Driving Too Fast for Conditions. Ussery was also cited for the new Move Over Law when he didn't switch lanes to avoid vehicles on the side of the road with their hazard lights on.
