SIUC History Professor Anthology Touches on Race and Immigration

By Brad Palmer

Carbondale, IL – A Southern Illinois University Carbondale professor is garnering national attention for his new book on race and immigration.

History professor Jonathan Bean's new anthology includes writings by Thomas Jefferson, Frederick Douglass and Martin Luther King, Jr. There are also selections from Supreme Court rulings, state constitutions and more.

Bean has been interviewed by media across the country about the book. He says he hopes it shows how the Civil Rights Movement was not a single moment in history and didn't involve just one group of people.

Bean says the collection of writings presents the classic liberal point of view on race and immigration. He says it's a belief in individual freedom from government-sponsored discrimination...something not expressed by either of today's two major political parties.

The book entitled "Race and Liberty in America: The Essential Reader" is available from Amazon
