Southern Illinois University Carbondale is advising university employees of a possible breech of personal information. In an email to faculty and staff, IT officials says a virus may have resulted in unauthorized access to employees name, social security number, bank account numbers, and other protected information on a university computer.
SIU-C Department of Public Safety director Todd Sigler says employees should follow the instructions in the email and contact the three credit reporting agencies and ask that a fraud alert be placed on their accounts.

Sigler says there is no need to call the Department of Public Safety unless someone finds some suspicious activity in their account. He says if that's the case, the DPS will open a police report and investigate in hopes of making an arrest. Sigler says ID theft cases are often difficult and can take a considerable amount of time to investigate.
