A national search for a permanent SIU Carbondale Chancellor could begin soon, as the university’s Board of Trustees are finalizing details for just how the process should go.

Trustees are considering the makeup of the committee, as well as guidelines for confidentiality for candidates and other issues. SIU President Randy Dunn says he expects a good group of people to apply.

“I think we’re going to be able to put together a fine pool of candidates. I think we can guarantee a sufficient size.”

In their discussion, Trustees emphasized a strong desire to make sure this campus leader will be in place on a long-term basis.

Trustee Joel Sambursky says the selection of a permanent Chancellor is not something he takes lightly.

“I feel the weight of getting this right, and the process has not necessarily – and I don’t mean to pick on Dr. Trevino here – has not necessarily, maybe, worked well in that.”

Fernando Trevino is one of several Chancellors to serve the Carbondale campus over the last decade – his term lasted less than a year. The current position opened after the untimely death of Interim Chancellor Paul Sarvela, who stepped in when Chancellor Rita Cheng took a job in Arizona.

SIU President Randy Dunn is currently serving a dual role as President and Carbondale Campus Chancellor.

Jennifer Fuller joined Capitol News Illinois in July 2023 as the organization’s broadcast director. She will oversee the launch and operations of CNI’s new broadcast division.
