Southern Illinois University will cover MAP grants for students for the fall 2016 semester on both the Carbondale and Edwardsville campuses.
The state's Monetary Awards Program, or MAP, provides grants based on financial need to Illinois undergraduates who study at approved colleges and universities within the state.
SIU covered the costs of the grants for both semesters during the 2015-16 academic year. At SIU Carbondale, $11.5 million was paid to just under 3,200 students. At SIU Edwardsville, $6.5 million was paid to over 2,200 students.
The stopgap budget approved last week by the General Assembly and Gov. Bruce Rauner includes $8.4 million in MAP funding for the SIU system.
SIU President Randy Dunn says this - along with the stopgap funding approved in April - covers the cost for the MAP grants in the 2015-16 academic year.
