SIU Edwardsville Boosts Minority Enrollment

Minority student enrollment at Southern Illinois University's Edwardsville campus is the highest it's been in at least two decades.

This fall, 27 percent of all students at the school identified themselves as minorities. The Alton Telegraph reports it's the highest percentage since at least 1990.

The university's student body comprises more black students than in previous years. African-American students accounted for about 13.4 percent of the student population.

Since fall 2010, black student enrollment has grown by 28 percent or 281 students. The Latino population has grown by 19 percent to almost 500 students.

International student enrollment also has increased, surpassing 400 students for the first time since 2004. About 420 students on campus are from other countries.
