SIU Blackout Cancer Game has Special Meaning for Two Salukis

SIU

Saturday's Blackout Cancer game at Southern Illinois University Carbondale holds a special meaning for two players.

The Salukis will be wearing black jerseys in support of building a cancer center in the area. The public bid to put names on these jerseys.   The black out cancer game is always special to the salukis, but this year's game is extra special to a couple of red-shirt freshmen.  Linebacker Darius Meriwether and lineman Cody Pollock will both wear jerseys with the name of a family member affected by cancer. Cody's jersey will have the name Helen Pollock on it.  Helen is Cody's grandmother who passed away from breast cancer.  Cody says that when he picked SIU, he didn't know about this opportunity to honor his family, but he is glad he has it.  Cody says he also is glad he gets to share the day with his family. Darius will be wearing the name of his aunt Yvonne on his jersey.  The linebacker says that he and his family just wanted to show their support for her.

Both Darius and Cody said that it's a huge honor to support anyone with this event, but it is a little extra special with a family member on their back.
