The owners and operators of a southern Illinois mobile home park have agreed to a settlement in a lawsuit that accused them of discrimination.
The U.S. district court for Southern Illinois approved the settlement Monday between the Justice Department and Williams Trailer Court in Marion.
The lawsuit claimed the park's part-owner, Lyle Williams, violated the Fair Housing Act by refusing to rent mobile homes to African Americans and families with children.
The lawsuit also named as defendants the park's other two owners, Kyle and David Williams.
Under the terms of the settlement, Williams Trailer Court will pay $45-thousand to compensate the victims. The owners will also pay $30-thousand in civil penalties.
Anyone who believes they were discriminated against at Williams Trailer Court should call the U.S. Justice Department at 800-896-7743 or by email at fairhousing@usdoj.gov.
