Carbondale, IL – Advocates say senior adults need to get smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, practice fire safety, and practice fire escape plans.
Executive Director John Smith of the Egyptian Area Agency on Aging says that, with fall underway and the time changing, it's a good time to check your batteries in your smoke detectors.
Smith says that by keeping up on fire safety greatly helps reduce your chance of injury.
Unfortunately, senior adults and young children are the ones involved in a high number of fire fatalities.
Have a fire escape plan with two ways out of every room of your home and practice fire escapes with your grandchildren in case a real emergency should take place.
