SEMO President Talks Goals at Inauguration

Southeast Missouri State University continued a tradition Thursday that has gone by the way side for the most part in higher education.

The Cape Girardeau institution held an inauguration ceremony for its new president, Carlos Vargas, who assumed control of the university last July.
In his first year on the job, Vargas says he has learned his focus on student success is consistent with the values at Southeast Missouri State.

"I have found the University to be a very caring institution, very committed to student success. So, the University and I have come together in making sure that we emphasize that kind of objective and goal for all of the students."

Vargas says he wants to strike a balance in which the university honors its traditions, but becomes innovative in its approach to attract students and to make sure those students are prepared for an ever changing global society.

"In talking about innovation, and then actually becoming innovative, we are being a role model for the students. I think it is extremely important, these days, with the level of competition that universities experience, to give the students a reason to come here and innovation is one way of doing it."

Vargas said he hopes to focus on retaining and graduating students; enhancing the University Studies general education program; strengthening academic departments, programs and faculty; investing in the regional campuses; promoting institutional pride; and promoting the Redhawk Athletics program and student athletes.

During the ceremony, Vargas was presented with the chain of office and presidential medallion by Southeast Board of Regents President Jay Knudtson.
