SCC President Comments on Overspending Accusations

Shawnee Community College administration has been accused recently of overspending.

Administration at Shawnee Community College recently came under fire after the purchase of an audio-visual lectern that's cost was nearly fifteen-thousand dollars.
Shawnee Community College President Dr. Peggy Bradford says the cost is justified when looking at use.

"What a lot of people forget is that when you are buying commercial it lasts. You are buying for 20-30 years out. If you buy just for a short period of time, it doesn't last. You end up replacing it."

With a life expectancy of 20 years, the cost of the lectern comes to just over fourteen dollars per week.

Like many institutions of higher education, Shawnee College is looking at ways to reduce expenses but still achieve a high quality of education for students.

Bradford says that has led for the college administration to cut or consolidate classes that had little to no enrollment.

"When you see that a class has zero students in it, has two or three students in it, you put those students together."

Bradford says no faculty positions were cut during the consolidation.
