Rauner Orders Ethics Changes, Removes Appointees

State of Illinois

Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner has issued an executive order banning some state employees from negotiating for a lobbying job while working for the state.

The order, issued Tuesday, also prohibits employees in state agencies and the executive branch from taking lobbying positions for one year after they leave their state job.

The Winnetka Republican says government needs to restore the trust of taxpayers after a history of ethics problems. He says Illinois has to regain its good name.

Rauner's order also requires all new employment contracts to be approved by the Governor's Office of Management and Budget. And he says the budget office will do a thorough review of all existing employment contracts to identify "political, wasteful or other improper purposes.''

In addition, Rauner also reversed more than 100 appointments made by Governor Pat Quinn - some in his final hours in office. Among those removed from their post: Joel Sambursky from the SIU Board of Trustees, Shannon Woodworth from the DuQuoin State Fair, and Brad Cole from the Illinois Human Rights Commission.

Rauner took the oath of office Monday.
