Rauner Continues Criticism of Spring Session

Zach Bernard

Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner is calling the Legislature's spring session "stunningly disappointing" after Democrats passed a budget despite an impasse over how to fully fund it.

Democrats want Rauner to approve a tax increase to help balance a 2016 budget that's more than $3 billion short of anticipated revenues.

Rauner says he won't approve the budget or a tax hike until Democrats pass some of his pro-business priorities.

Rauner says there's been "no sincere effort" by Democratic leaders to compromise. Democrats say Rauner's agenda hurts the middle class.

Rauner is poised to launch a multimillion-dollar ad campaign blasting Democrats. He says he "won't back down" as negotiations continue.

The governor says he's preparing for "all contingencies" if an impasse continues and schools and agencies are at risk of shutting down.
