Against a backdrop of business leaders gathered at State Farm Insurance in Bloomington, Governor Pat Quinn Thursday detailed his Illinois Pathways Initiative.
Quinn mentioned the initiative during his State of the State address last week. The $4 million public-private partnership aims to increase learning through innovative approaches to education and readiness. Part of the initiative is Science, Technology, Engineering and Math--or STEM--learning. Quinn says it requires a badly-need technology update for Illinois students he calls "digital children." He says more details on his plans to upgrade technology in Illinois classrooms will be revealed in his budget message later this month.
Quinn says the initiative will be a major part of the state's goal to have at least 60% of adults with a college degree or certificate by 2025. Currently the figure is 43%. $3.2 million of the funding comes from federal Race To The Top grants.
