Alex Kierstead

The SIU student who died in last week's house fire in Carbondale has been identified.

Carbondale Police say 20-year-old Alex Kierstead from Aurora was the only person inside the residence on West Freeman Street when the fire occurred in the early morning hours of November 23rd.
Kierstead's death has hit us particularly hard at WSIU Radio. Alex was one of our student reporters for more than a year.

An autopsy on Kierstead's body was conducted on Friday.

While the investigation remains active and ongoing, authorities say at this time there is nothing to suggest foul play is involved.

WSIU Radio will run a special audio memorial of Alex Kierstead on Wednesday.

A tribute here at wsiunews.org is also in the works.
