Play at JALC Features Voices of Workers Who Lost Their Jobs When the Herrin Maytag Plant Closed

A unique theatrical performance is coming to John A. Logan College this week.

Theatre director Jason Hedrick says Herrin Made is constructed from interviews of former employees of the Herrin Maytag factory. The plant closed in December 2006.
Hedrick says it's a moving docu-drama.

"All of the words in the play are words that people actually spoke. We tried to maintain the spoken quality of their words. So, the script is how they said it. How they told it."

The material comes from interviews with Logan history professor David Cochran and put together by local playwright Lynn Damme. He says the material is touching.

"There's a moment at the end that really moves me where one of the workers is faced with the choice of going back to school at John A. Logan, but has worked at this factory all his life, sort of has this revelation of 'boy, if had it to do all over again, I certainly wouldn't work in a factory. I'd get my education. I'd get a backpack and I'd go see the world.'"

The performances will be Thursday at 7 p.m., Friday at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. and Saturday at 7 p.m. Hedrick says a short Q & A and reception will follow Saturday's performance.
