Parkland College Announces Layoffs

Parkland College's president says it will lay off about nine employees after Tuesday because of the state budget deadlock.
President Tom Ramage said in a message to employees Thursday that nearly $567,000 in layoffs or contract non-renewals would begin once a voluntary separation program ends Monday. He says the voluntary separations have saved the Champaign community college about $1 million.

The Legislature and Gov. Bruce Rauner have been unable to agree on a higher education budget this fiscal year, cutting off state funding.

Ramage says the budget impasse has cost Parkland 47 positions from the total of 492 it began the fiscal year with.

The (Champaign) News-Gazette reports the Parkland board this month approved an 11.7 percent increase in in-district tuition and fees for students beginning July 1.
