A magazine catering to outdoor enthusiasts has selected the best hiking spot in each state.
For Illinois, the publication Outside chose the nearly 4-mile Jackson Falls Trail in the Shawnee National Forest.
Located near the town of Ozark in Johnson County, the publication says Jackson Falls offers arguably the best rock climbing in southern Illinois, with dozens of scenic climbing areas along the sandstone bluffs and freestanding boulders.
It says most of the routes at Jackson Falls are sport routes, though there are a number of traditional routes, and many excellent bouldering opportunities.
