Olney Mayor Mark Lambird asked the residents of Richland County to help make face masks to slow the spread of COVID-19.

When face mask supplies started getting low, the Olney Quilters Guild started getting request to make 100% cotton masks.

“Our goal is to fill all the requests as quick as we can.”

The group has already made and distributed more than 500 masks. Laura Williams says they each take about 20 minutes to make.

Shorty after they started the elastic for the ear straps started running low.

“We have gotten creative and we’re now making the actual straps that go around your ears, instead of being elastic we’re making that out of fabric.”

So far the group has donated masks to nursing homes, the post office, schools, and people seeking medical care.
